Description

A trip to the Grossglockner is a great way to start the adventure with peaks of Alps. It is recommended for experienced mountain tourists. Climbing the Grossglockner will provide plenty of experience, fantastic views and the taste of a real alpine trip!

Grossglockner is the highest peak of Austria, 3798 m a.s.l. It is located in Glocknergruppe, a subgroup of the Hohe Tauern, part of the Central Alps. The difficulty level of the easiest route is PD + where PD means “a bit difficult”. The main peak was first summitted on July 28, 1800.

The characteristic pyramidal shape of the Grossglockner summit consists of two summits – Grossglockner and Kleinglockner. They are separated by a small, narrow pass called Glocknerscharte.

At the Grossglockner summit there is a cross weighing 350 kg, called “The Imperial Cross”, set on the 25th wedding anniversary of Franz Josef I with Elisabeth Wittelsbach (Sissi). The cross was brought to the top in parts and assembled there. The first Polish ascent to Grossglockner was made by Ludwik Chałubiński with guides in 1884 or 1885.
